Hooray! The animal lover I am just got the news from the Chicago Brookfield Zoo that there's a new addition to Tropic World: Asia.On October 6, Sophia Bornean Orangutan gave birth to a daughter. As you can see from the photo above, the mother-child duo is sticking close together.
Very close together—orangutan infants actually cling to their mothers. It's a habit that keeps them from falling when mom needs to use both arms to swing from one tree limb to another.
While the newborns presence in itself is enough to bring smiles to all observers, there's another reason to celebrate her birth. Bornean orangutans are endangered. So endangered, in fact, that the species is facing extinction in the wild unless there's a halt to the ongoing deforestation of their habitat for palm oil production.
This brought tears to my eyes to know that my Zoo has an endangered Orangutan baby! Congrats Sophia!
